News and Announcements

Three CSHS students named Hispanic Scholars

Three CSHS students named Hispanic Scholars Jose Emmanuel Quiros, Alexander Sanchez, and Samantha Villalobos have been named Scholars by the 2014-2015 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) and received a certificate of recognition from the College Board.

To be eligible for this honor, students must have taken the PSAT/NMSQT during their junior year, be of at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino descent, achieve the minimum PSAT/NMSQT score (181 this year), and achieve a GPA of 3.0 or higher by the end of junior year. The NHRP awards students in two categories, Scholar and Honorable Mention. The Scholar distinction indicates that a student has achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher while Honorable Mention indicates a GPA of 3.0-3.49.

The College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT. These students are from the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands, and the Marshall Islands, as well as U.S. citizens attending schools abroad. Approximately 200 of the top-scoring PAA™ students from Puerto Rico are also included.

CSHS Students Qualify as National Merit Semifinalists

CSHS Students Qualify as National Merit Semifinalists Congratulations to College Station High School's first three National Merit Semifinalists, Jiatao Liang, David Rambo, and Kelly Zhang. These three students have earned qualifying scores on their 11th grade PSAT and will be competing to become National Merit Finalists. They are among only 16,000 students in the nation who have qualified to compete for National Merit Scholarships.

We'd also like to recognize their classmates at our sister school, A&M Consolidated, who qualified as National Merit Semifinalists: Anisha Datta, Dawson Deere, Evan Gan, Yuchen Gao, Charles Morey, Jeremy Rees, Dahlia Rohm, Shilpa Saravanan, and Emily Zhao.

Congratulations to all of these CSISD students!

Students Named to All-State Journalism Staff

Students Named to All-State Journalism Staff The University Interscholastic League announced recently that Fiona Cohen and Lisa Liu from College Station High School’s The Catamount newspaper have been named to the 2013-14 All-State Journalism staff.

“High school journalists who go above and beyond the classroom assignments earn the elite title of All-State staff,” said Jeanne Acton, UIL Journalism Director.

To become a member of the All-State Journalism Staff, students must accumulate points over the year based on their achievements at UIL journalism competition and other writing and publication contests, both statewide and nationwide. Students then apply to UIL to become a member of the staff.

Cohen is a senior and entertainment editor, and Liu is a junior and managing editor. The staff is advised by Courtney Wellmann. Assistant adviser is Teresa Laffin.
